About the opportunity

We are looking for 2 x motivated Aboriginal Trainee Environmental Health Officers to join our team on a term contract, full-time basis up to 6 years. 

Within this traineeship you will:

  • study a bachelor degree in environmental health at Western Sydney University by distance part-time and attend workshops
  • have access to paid study leave and tutoring
  • have university fees paid for all subjects you pass
  • have structured on-the-job training
  • be part of the Aboriginal Environmental Health Officer trainee network
  • work in the office and out in the community
  • inspect swimming pools, food, skin penetration and other businesses
  • respond to enquiries and investigate complaints.

Qualifications and experience

Essential:

  • Evidence of previous education and training or work experience that will enable successful enrolment in the Bachelor of Science (Environmental Health) at Western Sydney University
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identify as being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and be accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977
  • Current class C driver's licence.

Desirable:

  • Interest in current environmental health issues
  • Demonstrated high level of oral and written communication skills
  • Computer literacy in basic Microsoft Office applications and the ability to quickly learn corporate applications
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.

Remuneration and benefits

The salary and conditions of employment are in accordance with Blacktown City Council’s Enterprise Agreement.

  • Trainee rates apply to this position
  • 35-hour working week
  • Opportunity to participate in Council's flextime arrangement

To be eligible for this traineeship, you will:

  • Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by descent and identity, who is recognised by the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community
  • Be able to successfully enrol in the Bachelor of Science (Environmental Health) at Western Sydney University
