The City of Salisbury’s Field Services Department is dedicated to maintaining Council’s essential infrastructure, ensuring that public spaces and assets remain safe, functional, and inviting. This comprehensive service includes the maintenance of buildings, workshops, fleet, and stores; civil infrastructure such as drainage, footpaths, and waste management; and the care of parks, landscapes, and open spaces. Specialized teams handle everything from arboriculture and turf management to pest control and security, while also responding to emergencies and maintaining contracts for features like reserve maintenance and cemetery services. Field Services plays a crucial role in supporting a vibrant and sustainable community.

 

The Role:

As a Leading Civil Worker, you’ll take charge of a dedicated team responsible for the maintenance of roads, drainage, verges, and other civil assets. You’ll operate machinery, coordinate work schedules, and support staff development while ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and coordinate the Civil Maintenance Team to ensure works are completed safely, efficiently, and to required standards.
  • Undertake general civil maintenance tasks, including road repairs, drainage maintenance, and verge upkeep.
  • Operate and maintain a range of civil plant and equipment, including backhoes, excavators, skid steers, and crane trucks.
  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and prioritising maintenance programs and resource allocation.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and support to team members, including apprentices and trainees.
  • Ensure compliance with Work Zone Traffic Management Australian Standards, including erecting temporary signage.
  • Monitor and report infrastructure defects and assist with continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records of labour, equipment, and materials using digital tools and systems.
  • Support coordination of external contractors and act as a Superintendent’s representative when required.
  • Promote a positive and safe working environment, fostering teamwork and professional development.

 

To be successful within this role you will possess:

  • Certificate III in Civil Construction (or equivalent).
  • MR Driver’s License or higher.
  • Work Zone Traffic Management Certificate.
  • Competency in operating plant equipment (e.g., skid steer, backhoe, excavator, crane truck).
  • Strong leadership, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Computer literacy, with the ability to use Microsoft applications and job management software.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment and adapt to change.
  • Certificate IV in Frontline Management.
  • Additional plant operation competencies (e.g., loader, dogging, crane operation).
  • Knowledge of environmental and safety regulations related to civil works.
