The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is currently seeking a suitable person to fill the role of Curator Ovals. The City maintains approximately 35 hectares of sporting turf across 10 arenas, serving the communities needs for a variety of organisations, including cricket, football (AFL), football (soccer), rugby, athletics, tee-ball, touch football, and others. These arenas are maintained by a dedicated team committed to dealing with the challenges inherent with ensuring the turf is prepared and presented to a high standard in accordance with the objectives and requirements of the Council.

Duties:

1. Professional management of specialised fine turf surfaces, ensuring a high standard of presentation for specific events according to contemporary hortcultutral techniques and established nutrition and maintenance programs.

2. Identify irrigation problems, reporting promptly to the Supervisor Sporting Ovals and Irrigation Team.

3. Identify and report early signs of disease, pests, weeds and disorders amongst turf surfaces and apply appropriate methods of control i.e through mechanical means and use of chemical control measures as directed.

4. Assist in the preparation and presentation of playing fields and turf wickets for play.

5. Professional operation of a variety of plant and equipment associated with the day-to-day maintenance of Council’s facilities including pre-starts, cleaning of equipment/vehicles after any use and reporting of faults and/or damages to the Workshop and Supervisor Sporting Ovals.

6. Provide limited guidance and on-the-job training as directed to team members as required.

7. Assist with construction projects and major maintenance works as directed.

8. Report daily to the immediate Supervisor for instructions and to inform on operational matters.

9. Adhere to all City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder policies and procedures and ensure personal safety at work and that of others.

10. Other accountabilities and responsibilities as directed by the Supervisor Sporting Ovals and/or Coordinator City Presentation

Skills, knowledge & capacity:

1. Tertiary qualification in Turf Management (minimum Cert III Sports Turf Management) with proven experience in Sports Turf Management.

2. Spraying certificate.

3. Good verbal communication skills.

4. Ability to work under general supervision or unsupervised.

5. Understanding and knowledge of safe work practices.

6. Experience in operating various items of plant equipment associated with turf maintenance.

7. Current satisfactory National Police Clearance.

8. Current WA “C” Class driver’s licence.
