About the role:

Our Development Planning team has an opportunity for an enthusiastic and customer focused Statutory Planner on a temporary, full-time basis to cover a period of parental leave until 27 June 2025 as well as a permanent full-time opportunity. Applicants with 1-3 years' experience will be considered including graduates.

The role will involve assessing and managing land use and development applications, providing planning advice to the public, preparing and presenting submissions before VCAT, improving internal processes and assisting with planning projects across other Council teams. You will have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of applications, including residential, commercial and industrial developments and to work alongside and learn from experienced planners and arboricultural and ESD professionals.

We are looking for a team player who wants to shape positive outcomes for the community. You will bring a tertiary qualification in urban planning (or similar) and be comfortable working under the requirements of Planning and Environment Act 1987. You will be proactive in negotiation and problem solving and display excellent time management and communication skills, including report writing.

Skills, experience and certificates:

  • Recognised tertiary qualification in urban planning
  • Experience in a planning role at either local government or private level desirable but not essential
  • A working knowledge and understanding of the Planning and Environment Act 1987 and associated statutory procedures including the provisions and both State and Local Planning Policies of the Planning Scheme
  • Customer service, negotiation and problem solving skills
  • Excellent time management and administrative skills
  • Interpersonal and communications skills including report writing
  • Knowledge of the principles and best practice of statutory planning
