Cairns Regional Council is seeking an enthusiastic Interpretive Officer Botanic Gardens to enhance our botanical collections and create enriching educational programs.

Primary Objectives:

  • To create, deliver and facilitate botanical collections-based interpretive, wayfinding and public educational programs throughout all Botanic Areas.
  • Activate public spaces in the Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre to improve the overall visitor experience and develop the centre as the gardens’ information hub.
  • Develop, implement, review, and improve programmes relating to Cairns Botanic Areas
  • Outreach, strategic planning and engagement with key stakeholders and professional organisations.
  • Engage with external stakeholders and professional bodies to improve the Cairns Botanic Areas’ profile and standing in the community.
  • Provide an outstanding level of service to internal and external customers in accordance with the service standards set by City Venues.

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of engaging diverse audiences and conveying complex botanical information in an accessible manner.
  • Experience with plant database management, cataloguing botanical collections, and producing interpretive materials.
  • Skilled in building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including professional organisations, community groups, and volunteers.
  • Capable of coordinating and managing multiple projects, including overseeing contractors and volunteers.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for plants, environmental education, and public engagement.
  • Innovative thinking in developing programs and materials that captivate and educate the public.
  • Capable of mentoring staff and volunteers and stepping into the role of Curator when needed.
