The Workshop team plays a vital role in maintaining the city's fleet and equipment, ensuring they remain safe, reliable, and operational. Responsible for regular servicing and preventive maintenance, the team oversees a diverse range of vehicles, from light and heavy fleet to specialized equipment and plant machinery. Their expertise extends to diagnostic services, quickly identifying and resolving mechanical issues to minimize downtime. Additionally, the team carries out modifications and fabrications, customizing vehicles and equipment to meet specific operational needs. Safety is a top priority, with thorough inspections conducted to ensure compliance with legal and safety standards, keeping both employees and the community safe.
About the Role:
As a Mechanic, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that all Council vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, and fit for operation. You will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of equipment, including construction and earthmoving machinery, trucks, light vehicles, and small engines. Your work will directly contribute to keeping our operations running smoothly and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain Council’s fleet, including diesel and petrol engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and transmissions.
- Perform routine servicing, scheduled maintenance, and breakdown repairs efficiently and effectively.
- Carry out welding repairs and minor fabrication work as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of all work completed, including job cards and electronic records.
- Ensure all plant, equipment, and vehicles are maintained to a high operational standard.
- Utilize hand tools, welding equipment, and safety gear when working with hazardous materials.
- Operate other plant or equipment when required and appropriately licensed.
- Work under minimal supervision while collaborating with team members for complex tasks.
- Assist in coaching and training apprentices, trainees, and casual staff.
- Uphold workplace safety standards and maintain a clean, organized workshop environment.
To excel within this role you will need:
- Trade-qualified mechanic with significant experience in automotive repairs.
- Experience working with a diverse range of plant, equipment, and vehicles.
- HR and Forklift Licence (or willingness to obtain).
- Strong knowledge of workshop procedures, automotive repairs, and fleet maintenance practices.
- Basic skills in auto electrical, hydraulics, and welding (MIG, ARC).
- Ability to work in both workshop and field environments.
- Good computer literacy for accessing and updating maintenance records.
- Strong time management, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
