About the role

The Sports Turf Curator will be responsible for carrying out maintenance and improvement works in Council’s sporting fields and council facilities in a safe, efficient and effective manner, so as to ensure that the Sportsfields, parks and reserves of Merri-bek are kept in a well-maintained condition for our community to enjoy. This includes inspecting, maintaining, and renovating turf to the highest standard. You will be responsible for the maintenance, repairs and reporting of all tools, equipment, and fleet and demonstrate a commitment to the health, wellbeing, and safety of yourself and the wider team.

Skills and experience require to perform the role

As the Sports Turf Curator you will have demonstrated experience and a strong knowledge of green keeping and sports turf management. You will thrive in a hands on, physical work environment and will use your high energy levels to lead and motivate others. You will be able to manage you own time and operate effectively and safely with limited supervision.

To be successful in this role you will have

Skills and Attributes

  • Demonstrated skills in the safe and competent operation of:
    • a ride-on mower; tractors with various implements, turf maintenance machinery
    • a 2-axle rigid vehicle greater than 8 tonnes GVM
    • a range of hand tools and light mechanical plant
    • a multi pro sprayer or similar herbicide / pesticide application unit
  • The highest level of personal integrity and ethical behaviour
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Ability to operate effectively with limited direct supervision
  • Ability to complete tasks within tight time frames

 Qualifications required

  • Satisfactory completion of Certificate III in Sports Turf Management or other relevant Trade Certificate (Cert III) and relevant open space maintenance experience
  • Demonstrated experience in the basic maintenance and minor repair of relevant turf equipment
  • A current Victorian Drivers Licence is essential
  • Current Driver’s License

Desirable Experience, not essential

  • Experience maintaining turf wickets, maintaining warm and cool season turf surfaces
  • Experience in sports fields line marking
  • Strong ability to identify pest and diseases
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising and motivating staff
