Your Opportunity

The Sustainability and Environment Officer is highly focused on the education of staff and the community on sustainability initiatives and environmental improvements in the Southern Downs Region. This position contributes to the understanding of sustainability initiatives within the Southern Downs and works to improve environmental outcomes within Council.

 

Term:                         Permanent Full-time 

Hours of Work:         72.5 hours per fortnight, 9-day fortnight

Pay Level:                 $2,806.57 to $3,455.97 per fortnight (Level 3-5), plus superannuation and annual leave loading 

In accordance with Council's Enterprise Agreement and the relevant Award. Pay rate dependent on relevant skills and experience. 

Employment Base:  Warwick or Stanthorpe, Queensland (will be negotiated with successful candidate)

  • Promote sustainability and environmental activities, initiatives and awareness programs to the community through a variety of mediums including on-site verbal presentations, publications and web pages aimed at achieving a high level of community participation and acceptance of Council’s sustainability and environmental initiatives.
  • Prepare and control the implementation of strategies associated with the Southern Downs Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
  • Support Council Departments in the delivery of programs to meet the outcomes of the Southern Downs Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
  • Develop new policies, processes, information sheets, and procedures as required by and to support the Environmental Sustainability Strategy implementation.
  • Liaison with government agencies and peak representative bodies, the media and educational establishments in order to develop a platform for delivering sustainability and environmental initiatives
  • Support the delivery of staff engagement programs to increase sustainability and environmental awareness and embed action within the organisation.

 

What You Will Need

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • A relevant qualification of at least degree level and relevant experience OR a combination of qualifications, skills, experience, expertise and competence sufficient to perform the full duties of the position
  • A current Class C (car) licence or greater 
  • Well-developed communication, networking and interpersonal skills demonstrating an ability to liaise and communicate with all sections of the community and staff;
  • Sound knowledge of current legislation (State and Federal) and initiatives in the environmental sustainability sector, and ability to utilise this information to inform work and educate others;
  • Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to formulate, deliver and report on programs and procedures (including budgeting);
  • To be able to demonstrate your competence in relation to all of the Selection Criteria as detailed in the Position Description;
  • The legal right to live and work in Australia.

About the Environmental Services Department

The Environmental Services department falls within the Planning and Environmental Services Directorate and plays a critical role in delivering on the liveability of our region.  The Regulatory Services, Local Laws and Waste Management teams cover a diverse range of roles and responsibilities from ensuring food and public health safety, investigating environmental nuisance and pollution incidences, animal control, pest management, environmental sustainability programs and planning and building compliance.  Furthermore, the department delivers all aspects of waste operations including roadside collections, waste facilities, investigating waste minimisation and resource recovery opportunities and the strategic management of waste in Southern Downs.
