Fairfield City Council is seeking a motivated and eager individual to join our team as an Organisational Development & Learning (OD&L) Trainee. Role Overview

As an OD&L Trainee, you will support the OD&L Coordinator in the development, implementation, and delivery of learning and development programs, initiatives, and strategies that align with the Council’s goals. You will gain hands-on experience in supporting employee learning, performance management, and talent development while helping foster a positive, engaged workplace culture.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist in the design, coordination, and delivery of training programs and workshops for staff across the organisation.
  • Help with administrative support for training sessions, including scheduling, booking venues, and managing participant records.
  • Support the development and implementation of performance management systems to enhance employee performance and engagement.
  • Assist with employee onboarding and induction programs, ensuring new staff are well-integrated into the organisation.
  • Contribute to the creation of learning materials, resources, and internal communications to promote development opportunities.
  • Help with tracking and reporting on training effectiveness, employee development progress, and feedback from learning programs.
  • Participate in employee engagement and wellbeing initiatives, assisting with activities designed to improve employee satisfaction and culture.
  • Assist with succession planning and talent management, ensuring the right skills are developed within the workforce to meet future needs.

What We’re Looking For

  • You must be 18 years or older and eager to start a career in Organisational Development and Learning.
  • A strong interest in people development, with a passion for learning and enhancing workplace culture.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with people at all levels of the organisation.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
  • A team player with a positive attitude, who can collaborate with colleagues and contribute to group efforts.
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with a willingness to take on new challenges and responsibilities.
  • A basic understanding of learning and development principles is desirable, but not essential.
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office) and the ability to learn new software and tools quickly.
  • An interest in HR, organisational development, or psychology would be beneficial but not essential.

About the Traineeship

This traineeship is part of the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or similar qualifications in Organisational Development, delivered through a combination of on-the-job training and formal study over a 12-month period. The course will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to assist in the delivery of organisational development programs, staff training, and performance management.

What’s In It for You?

  • Undertake study in, and completion of, Certificate IV Training and Assessment.
  • Provide administrative support for training programs including liaison with training providers, participants and caterers.
  • Administer the Learning Management System, including testing and updates, and supporting new learners to the system.
  • Manage the evaluation section of the Dashboard, ensuring that all participants in training sessions complete the online evaluation.  Create and maintain attendance records for training sessions.
  • Create, implement and manage the coordination and maintenance of the L&D Training calendar – hard copies and on the intranet.
  • Assist the OD&L Coordinator in the delivery of training by organising printing of resources, liaising with caterers and the Governance Support Officer to ensure room setup is as needed.
  • Create and manage the Excel spreadsheet for staff registrations in the MCI Virtual Training Sessions.
  • Provide customer service, fielding requests from staff, identifying their needs and referring them promptly to implement an appropriate course of action to meet their needs.
  • Ensure that the OD&L site on FirstCall is up to date, implementing changes and updates through the FirstCall Administrator system.
