Cairns Regional Council is looking for a compassionate and dedicated Animal Care Attendant to join the Community Safety team. This role involves maintaining the well-being of animals in Council's care, ensuring they receive excellent in-house care, and assisting with their rehabilitation, rehoming, and treatment as required. You will work in the Animal Care Facility, ensuring
compliance with relevant legislation and Council procedures, while delivering outstanding customer service and collaborating with animal welfare groups.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide daily care for animals, including feeding, cleaning kennels, exercising, and monitoring health.
• Manage impounded animals showing signs of illness or disease, coordinating treatment and quarantine as needed.
• Monitor animal rehoming efforts, conducting behavioural assessments, and coordinating transportation for rehoming.
• Carry out impounding and releasing of animals in compliance with Council procedures and legislative requirements.
• Assist with veterinary procedures and provide aftercare for animals following treatments.
• Assess animals for euthanasia, making informed recommendations to senior staff as required.
• Liaise with rehoming groups to facilitate the placement of suitable animals.
• Assist in the loan and return of animal traps to customers.
• Provide guidance to volunteers on safe work methods and practices.
• Respond courteously and effectively to customer enquiries, maintaining accurate records.
• Ensure all corporate information is captured within Council's business systems following record-keeping policies.
• From time to time, act in the position of Leading Pound Officer, overseeing the operation of the Animal Care Facility.
• Participate in a rotational weekend roster, typically one weekend per month.
Qualification you will need:
• Current "C" Class Driver's Licence.
• Certificate IV in Animal Control & Regulation, Certificate IV in Animal Behaviour & Training, or Certificate IV in Vet Nursing.
• Authorised Microchip Implanter.
• Demonstrated experience in pound operations and knowledge of legislation governing local government-operated pounds.
• Proficiency in handling animals, including dogs, cats, and livestock.
• Understanding of animal capture techniques and the ability to assess dangerous animal behaviour.

of life whilst balancing empathy for the customer’s situation whilst following Council regulations.
