Role Overview

This position supports Council's direction by providing leadership, support and direction for the Mowing work group. The position is expected to provide technical advice, work schedules monitoring and maintenance planning for mowing maintenance. Tasks including mowing, edging, brushcutting, blowing, plant operation and truck driving in accordance with Council’s policies and standards.  These activities make up part of the multi-disciplined team that is responsible for the construction and maintenance of Council's Open Space assets. These assets include parks, reserves, sporting facilities, urban streetscapes, beach, foreshores and cemeteries.

The position will be required to assist other Open Space works teams when required.

Essential Knowledge & Skills: 

  • Demonstrated good knowledge and skill from working in the industry.
  • Demonstrated experience with parks mowing maintenance activities including; industrial turf mower operations including tractors, large ride-on mowers and other equipment associated with large scale industrial mowing operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in tree pruning, tree planting and tree machinery operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a team or independently and maintain good working relationships with all council employees.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide information, instruction and leadership within a team and maintain a good working relationships.
  • Be able to develop maintenance work plans and schedules for self and others
  • Knowledge and skills in communicating including providing good customer service.
  • Possess a commitment to undertake their work in a safe manner and promote a culture of safety.
  • Queensland ‘C’ Class driver’s licence that is current and maintained
  • Construction Industry White/Blue card. 

Essential Requirements: 

  • Schedule and undertake a range of mowing tasks including, mowing, edging, brushcutting, woodchippers and blowing.
  • Provide technical knowledge and guidance to the Mowing work group to ensure the parks and turf areas are well maintained for community use.
  • Program and schedule works to ensure mowing standards are achieved within mowing height tolerances and turf areas are ready for special events.
  • Provide knowledge of plant & equipment operations and guide workers to deliver a quality outcome of turf maintenance.
  • Undertake tree pruning, tree planting, Chipper and stump grinder machine operations as required.
  • Undertake landscaping and project work as required.
  • Perform tasks in a safe, competent, efficient and timely manner. Comply with all Council’s safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all work is undertaken to a quality standard which contributes to the overall presentation of Councils’ horticultural service standards to the satisfaction of the community.
  • Operate and maintain medium sized plant and equipment in a safe and efficient manner to maintain Council’s Open Space assets
  • Provide information and guidance to staff, assisted workers, contractors, trainees, casual employees and new starters.
  • Research and suggest new ways to improve work practices in accordance with council's continuous improvement commitment
