About the Program

Aligned with the Shire's Youth Strategy, the GAP-year program is an opportunity for local candidates who are unsure of their career path to have the opportunity for entry into the workplace to gain valuable skills, while being supported and set up for future workplace success without having to commit to a long-term position.

You will receive on the job and other professional development opportunities, career guidance and gain exposure to different work areas, by working on a rotation roster, while being supported by an allocated workplace buddy.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for the GAP-Year Program, you must:

  • Be a Local Shire of Ashburton school leavers aged 17 – 24
  • Be a current Shire of Ashburton resident
  • Already have your own accommodation in the town you wish to work in
  • Have the legal right to live and work in Australia
  • No previous work experience required

Where can I work?

The following areas will consider suitable candidates, based on availability of positions at the time of application.

  • Customer Service, Records, Finance, IT
  • Media and Marketing, Organisational Development (HR), WHS, Building and Maintenance, Lease and Accommodation
  • Visitor Centre, Library Services, Cleaning Services, Facilities Management
  • Town Maintenance Operators, Waste Services
