The Art Gallery of Ballarat is Australia’s oldest, largest and most engaging regional gallery. The Gallery is home to a nationally significant collection of over 11,500 artworks and hosts more than 30 exhibitions and 200 public programs and events each year. In 2023, the Gallery achieved over 40% growth in visitation and it is a key driver of cultural tourism to the Ballarat region as well as much loved local icon. 

The Role:

The Art Gallery of Ballarat is in an exciting period of change and growth. We are looking for two dynamic, creative and results focused individuals to undertake digitisation and documentation on the Gallery Collection for a two year period.

The primary objective of this role is to provide support to the collection management functions of the Art Gallery of Ballarat, with specific focus on the digitisation and documentation of the permanent collection.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Tertiary qualifications in related disciplines such as Visual Arts, Museum and Curatorial studies and/or knowledge and skills gained through relevant experience in a similar role within a cultural heritage and/or visual arts organisation. 
  • Demonstrated experience and working knowledge of collections management system, Vernon, as well as proficiency in operation of a PC using Work, Excel, Outlook and basic skills in digital asset management. 
  • Experience in preparing reports and variety of correspondence accurately and efficiently. 
  • Demonstrated art handling, digitisation and/or photographic experience 
  • Demonstrated organisational ability, research skills and attention to detail along with the ability to meet deadlines 
  • Ability to meet moderate to heavy physical demands of role whilst observing OH&S requirements. 
  • Experience in, and understanding of, current collection cataloguing procedures, and object-based collection inventory and research at a public art gallery or museum 
  • Experience using collection management system Vernon to update catalogue records, locations, image files and reports 
  • Experience in digital photography of collection-based materials 
  • Demonstrated experience in safe art handling practices across all media 
  • Working with Children Check 
  • A satisfactory National Police Check. 
  • First Aid Certificate Level 1 or Level 2.
