Strategic Communications Advisor

Develop & implement proactive/reactive comms, marketing, & engagement strategies to achieve Council goals.

The City of Salisbury is one of the largest and most progressive local government council’s in South Australia, serving a community of over 145,000 residents. The Council is committed to delivering exceptional community outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for its diverse and vibrant community.

The Community Experience team are a newly shaped team, with a new Manager at the helm. They have an ambitious communications and marketing framework they will be rolling out to support key council key priorities such as the $200 million redevelopment of the City Centre.

Your new role

In this role, you will develop and implement proactive and reactive communication, marketing, and engagement strategies to achieve the City of Salisbury’s goals, strategic priorities, and business objectives. You will provide expert advice and support to leadership and staff, manage communication campaigns, programs and projects, and oversee the production of community publications. Collaboration with various teams to embed a Community Experience Strategy, evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies, and ensure adherence to the organisation's brand and communication policies will be key aspects of your responsibilities.

Additionally, you will maintain effective relationships across the council, manage external supplier relationships, and oversee the Communications and Marketing team’s workflow and administrative practices. You will assist the Manager, Community Experience, in strategic projects, mentor team members, and manage sensitive communications strategies with a focus on risk mitigation.

What you'll need to succeed

To be considered for this role, you should have:

• Significant experience in a similar role, managing multiple strategic communications and marketing plans and projects for diverse stakeholders and audiences.
• Experience in the research, development, implementation, and evaluation of communication strategies, activities, and materials.
• A proven ability to write for a range of audiences with an emphasis on detail, accuracy, and plain English.
• The ability to work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.
• Demonstrated judgement and innovation in providing strategic solutions to complex communication needs.
• Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate teamwork, achieve positive change, and influence others with tact, discretion, and impartiality.
• Experience using significant delegated authority and initiative to provide expert communication advice to senior leadership and make high-level decisions regarding sensitive issues.
• Experience managing the development and production of communications collateral, including publications, internal communications, social media, web content, and promotional materials.
• Experience briefing and working collaboratively with external organisations such as videographers, photographers, graphic designers, and printers.
• Knowledge of the principles of effective communication and marketing, with an understanding of customer service principles and a community-centric approach in all interactions.

Desirable qualifications include:

• A tertiary qualification in Communications, Public Relations, Media, or a related field, or substantial demonstrated experience.
• Experience leading a small team to deliver quality outcomes.
• Understanding of communications and marketing in a local government environment.
• Project management experience, including time management, stakeholder management, issues management, attention to detail, and the delivery of agreed outcomes.
• A good understanding of legislation related to Local Government.
