Fairfield City Council is looking for a motivated and proactive individual to join our team as a WH&S Trainee! Role Overview

As a WH&S Trainee, you will assist the WH&S team in implementing safety programs, policies, and practices to promote a safe working environment for all staff. You will play a key role in supporting the development, coordination, and delivery of health and safety programs while gaining practical knowledge in the regulatory and compliance aspects of WH&S.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist the business in complying with WHS policies and procedures by identifying opportunities to minimise risk and injuries in the workplace through risk assessment.
  • Perform operational activities and processes including assisting in completion of WHS documentation, drafting correspondence, maintenance of risk register, analysis of data to contribute to achievement of service delivery objectives.
  • To ensure non-conformances, hazard notifications and accident investigations are rapidly addressed. Support the development and implementation of corrective actions and continuous improvement programs.
  • Partake in Inspections such as Workplace Safety Inspections/contractor reviews.  Applying comprehensive communication skills including preparation of reports, correspondence, collection of evidence, preparation of statements of evidence.
  • Document Control:  Maintain and complete documents to ensure that accurate records are kept and delivered to appropriate managers and staff within agreed time.
  • Work Health and Safety Management Systems (WHSMS): ensure that you are competent in the content and implementation of Council WHSMS and ensure that you maintain its integrity in-line with WHS consultation requirements.

What We’re Looking For

  • Current Year 12 student, recent school leaver, or early career professional
  • A strong interest in workplace safety and a passion for ensuring the health and wellbeing of others.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively communicate safety procedures and policies.
  • Ability to work well in a team and contribute to a positive, collaborative work environment.
  • A keen eye for detail, with the ability to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
  • A proactive attitude with a strong desire to learn and develop your skills in WH&S.
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office) and the ability to learn new software quickly.
  • A reliable and responsible work ethic, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

About the Traineeship

This traineeship is part of the Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, delivered through a combination of on-the-job training and formal study over a 12-month period. The course will provide you with the knowledge and practical skills to become proficient in WH&S practices, regulations, and procedures.
