About the Opportunity

Council has an exciting opportunity to join the Environmental Services team as a Plant Operator for the landfill sites within the Cabonne LGA.

The purpose of this position is to undertake the effective and efficient operation of Council’s landfill plant including the low loader, covering and management of tipped waste at the tip face, containment and control of surface water, soil erosion and siltation control over the landfill area. A HC truck licence is essential for this position.

This fulltime position operates over a 38-hour week with a 9-day fortnight. Below is a general description of the role, for more detail please refer to the attached position description.

General Activities of this position

To undertake the plant operation duties required to maintain and improve Council’s landfills including:

ensuring waste is disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner as required by solid waste landfill guidelines issued by the DECC,

operating the low loader compactor, excavation and other plant equipment efficiently and effectively, and to the required technical, safety and environmental standards.

Identifying and reporting contaminated waste to the Department Leader Environmental Services and take appropriate action in accordance with Council procedures and legislative requirements.

Maintaining leachate and stormwater systems in accordance with Council procedures and legislative requirements. o Undertaking fire fighting duties including controlling fires and maintaining fire breaks in accordance with Council procedures 

Moving wide loads around ensuring that approved cover material is spread and compacted to all tipped waste in accordance with Council procedures o Control odours from active tip area in accordance with Council procedures and legislative requirements. 

Undertaking effective asbestos management and burial in accordance with Council procedures and legislative requirements. 

Providing timely and accurate reports to the Department Leader Plant and Depots regarding faults, operational characteristics and performance and undertaking routine plant maintenance on the machine within operator’s capabilities. 

Completing all relevant records including timesheets, prestart checklist, plant sheets, risk assessments and other legislative related paperwork. 

Undertaking environmental protection and control related duties including sediment control. 

Undertaking site specific inductions and participating in toolbox meetings. o Undertaking work outside of normal hours and overtime as required to progress or complete assigned tasks.

What Do You Need to Be Successful?

Essential

  • Construction Induction Certification (White Card).
  • Class HC driver's licence
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to understand and follow detailed written and verbal instructions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a team-based approach, reliability and punctuality, with a proven ability to work in a team environment.
  • Displays a positive attitude.

Desirable

  • Certificate of competency in Front End Loader / Excavator Operations

  • This position is graded 5 in Council's salary system.
  • Gross weekly wage range is $1155.40 to $1244.20 dependant upon qualifications and experience.
