About Melton City Council

The City of Melton is a community where everyone belongs. Ours is a vibrant and diverse municipality — one of the fastest developing in Australia. Our organisation strives to provide our community with state-of-the-art amenity and facilities, engaging health and wellbeing options, and support to become active members of our Lifelong Learning City.

We invest in innovation, offering professional and personal development, and generous leave and flexibility to staff, while also fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture. You’ll be able to work close to home in a dynamic setting featuring cafes and retail options set amongst heritage buildings and open green spaces.

The Opportunity

The Waste Education Officer supports the organisation’s goals of promoting sustainability and responsible waste management by engaging the community, driving behaviour change, and delivering educational programs.

This role reports to the Coordinator Waste and Cleaning Operations within the City Delivery directorate and focuses on reducing contamination, addressing littering, and fostering sustainable waste practices through outreach campaigns and partnerships with local schools, organisations, and stakeholders. The officer also monitors the effectiveness of these initiatives, contributing to policy development aligned with legislative requirements and community goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive educational and behaviour change programs that incorporate a variety of formats, including printed materials such as brochures and flyers, as well as engaging online content designed for the Council’s website and social media platforms in waste reduction, recycling, and litter prevention through targeted educational programs and outreach activities, including campaigns that raise public awareness of waste management and litter impacts.
  • Consult with and deliver waste minimisation and behaviour change programs to various groups, including schools, sporting clubs, event organizers, internal departments, and culturally diverse communities to encourage sustainable practices.
  • Ensure educational and behaviour change programs are monitored, reviewed, and revised for effectiveness, utilising waste recycling data, key performance indicators, observations, and feedback.
  • Oversee the implementation and review of Waste Audit processes, monitoring and reporting on measures and outcomes, while developing and implement initiatives to improve recycling rates, reduce contamination, and address dumped rubbish and hard waste issues.
  • Educate residents and businesses on sustainable waste management practices, including kerbside systems for general waste, recycling, FOGO, and glass, while promoting proper disposal methods for hard waste and encourage the use of the Melton Recycling Facility.
