About the role

As part of our proactive and efficient Building Services team, you will contribute to maintaining the safety, compliance, and quality of Surf Coast Shire's built environment.

In the role of Municipal Building Surveyor, you will oversee essential inspections, lead enforcement actions, and engage with stakeholders to uphold safety and statutory obligations. With your technical expertise, you’ll mentor team members and guide emergency response efforts, ensuring our community’s well-being. Your work will support Council and the Community Life Division as you engage directly with owners, builders, and the public on key building matters, helping to make Surf Coast a safe, resilient place to live.

What you will bring to the role

Working collaboratively with the Team Coordinator, we are seeking a skilled and proactive leader who is passionate about public safety and compliance. You will have a proactive and consultative approach, technical expertise, and the resilience needed for emergency response. To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Building Act 1993, relevant legislation, and safety standards
  • Proven experience in building inspections, enforcement, compliance oversight, stakeholder engagement and negotiating solutions.
  • Ability to lead and mentor, building team capabilities and technical knowledge
  • Effective communication skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders, including the public
  • Proficiency in workflow management, report/brief writing and recordkeeping
  • Flexibility to handle after-hours responsibilities, including emergency on-call work

Key selection criteria
Mandatory qualifications, experience and requirement

  • Tertiary qualifications and registration with the VBA as a Building Surveyor (Unlimited) – (Qualification Check)
  • Understanding of rural and coastal building compliance issues.
  • Substantial experience in the public and or private building sector or related field.
  • Experience presenting evidence and reports to Building Appeals Board hearings and Magistrate’s Court Hearings.
  • Experience with the Place of Public Entertainment (POPE) Application, Permit and Inspection process.
  • A current Victorian drivers licence
  • A current Working With Children Check
  • You have the permanent right to live and work in Australia
  • Police Check results that are suitable for this position (will be arranged by Surf Coast Shire Council).
    A complete international criminal history check is required if the person has worked or lived overseas for any period of time OR a complete national criminal history check is required if the person has only ever worked in Australia.
