Position Overview

As a Senior Finance Officer, you will assist the Finance Manager in achieving financial management goals that align with Council’s budget, objectives, and compliance requirements. You will focus on delivering efficient financial reporting, budgeting, and accounting services across all functions of the department, ensuring the highest standards of accuracy, compliance, and financial integrity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the accuracy and integrity of Council’s financial ledgers and reconciliations.
  • Assist in managing cash reserves, treasury functions, and banking processes.
  • Contribute to the preparation of Council’s annual budget and financial performance reports.
  • Process general ledger journals, ensuring adherence to accounting policies and procedures.
  • Support asset management, including maintaining data integrity of Council’s asset register.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and collaborate with internal teams to improve systems and workflows.
  • Assist with internal and external audit engagements and prepare statutory reports and returns.
  • Manage risk registers, fees and charges, and provide financial advice as needed.

To be successful in the role, you will need:

  • A qualification in Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in accounting procedures, financial management, and reporting.
  • Strong time management skills with a high level of attention to detail, and proficient data entry and computer skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, customer-focused service.
  • Sound understanding of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) principles, with the ability to apply them effectively in the workplace.

To further enhance your success in the role, the following will be advantageous:

  • Experience working in local government finance, with a good understanding of its unique financial processes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of asset accounting practices and experience using the Authority financial management system.
  • Formal accounting qualifications and/or membership with a recognised professional accounting body.
