Banyule City Council is hiring a Senior Governance Officer to provide governance advice in the areas of Freedom of Information, Privacy & Data Protection and Public Transparency.

The Governance and Integrity Department enhances governance practices, improves decision-making, and effectively manages critical functions. It addresses statutory functions, strengthens preparedness for elections and caretaker conventions, and streamlines responsibilities to foster staff, councillor, and community confidence in integrity matters.

About the role:

  • Act as Councils key Senior Governance, Freedom of Information (FOI) and Public Transparency Officer by supporting Council to meet its obligations under Local Government Act 2020 and the Freedom of Information Act 1982.
  • Support the development and maintenance of Councils Privacy Framework, provide high level privacy and data protection advice to Councillors and Council Staff.
  • Respond to and manage queries from the Community and agencies regarding Council’s privacy practices including the oversight of relevant investigations.
  • Oversee and embed Council’s Privacy Policy and Information Privacy Principles as set out in the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014.
  • Provide support to the Governance and Integrity Department.
  • Provide sound advice, support and drive policy implementation across the organisation.
  • Support the Manager Governance and Integrity and Coordinator Governance and Integrity in the implementation of the caretaker and election period.

Skills, experience, and certificates:

  • Relevant knowledge and practical experience interpreting legislation.
  • Working experience as a privacy officer and freedom of information decision maker.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014, Freedom of Information Act 1982, Victorian Protective Data Security Framework and Standards and other relevant privacy legislation.
  • Previous experience developing a privacy management program/practice.
  • Experience working with Senior Leadership and Executive Leadership Teams and elected representatives in a local government context

Mandatory Pre-employment screenings:
